"Path to Wellness"
July 2008
...from Chagrin Valley Wellness Center
Dear Friend,
Summer is in full swing! Remember to wear your sunscreen & always drink plenty of water!
As you enjoy Independence Day's traditional festivities, take a moment to remember the brave men and women that gave, and continue to give, their lives in service of this country.

"There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life -- happiness, freedom, and peace of mind -- are always attained by giving them to someone else."
~Peyton Conway March

Welcome to a new column for our newsletter. As stated this newsletter will appear in your mailbox quarterly, with the next edition in September. This column will have two components, one with news of the Wellness Center and secondly, with an article about some of the techniques and background of Muscle Release Therapy, MRTh® and Functional Movement w/Pilates Machines(sm).
As I sit here and write to you we have just completed our second annual Walk for Wishes, benefiting the Make-A-Wish® Foundation. Last year we had a group of approximately twelve people, and this year we increased that to almost 40 individuals who walked so a young person who is suffering from a life threatening illness could smile and be happy. We were blessed to have walked with a four year old young lady who just had her wish granted. This August her and her family will take a trip to Disney World. Thanks to all who contributed both time and money to this very worthwhile event! Next year we want to double the walkers and the contributions, look for more information throughout the year.
In 1987 with the encouragement of Marge, I opened Chagrin Valley Massotherapy Clinic, in Solon, Ohio. It was difficult finding a place to rent because of the connotation of the word Massage. I was fortunate to find an individual who understood what Massage Therapy had to offer. As I worked my full time job in the Pipefitters my dream was to one day have a full time Therapy practice. That dream came about in June of 1988 as we started the journey we are on today. The goal was to help individuals to lead a comfortable life and be able to sustain themselves to do the things that they wanted to do. Early on I realized that the majority of modalities available to me were, for the most part, only temporary. With this becoming more of a reality, I drew on my mechanical background and started to devise what is now known as Muscle Release Therapy, MRTh® a registered Service Mark that has a specific goal. That goal is to bring about a neutral and functional posture that will serve the person to its fullest extent. Over the next few newsletters I will start to describe the specifics and how they were developed.
In closing, here is wishing you a Happy Fourth of July and a peaceful summer. May all of your wishes and dreams come true.
Dennis Gibbons, LMT

WOW! What a wonderful turnout!! The 16th Annual Walk for Wishes was an amazing event you had to attend to truly appreciate. Thousands of people from all walks of life braved the threatening rain clouds to support the Make-A-Wish families! Fortunately, the clouds only threatened rain and the day saw spots of sun accompanied by a refreshing summer breeze. Chagrin Valley Wellness Center was well represented by staff, family & friends. Thank you all so much for generously donating your time, energy & money for the benefit of the Make-A-Wish children and their families.

Want to Relax?
Try a Relaxation Massage to melt away stress and agitation!
Treat yourself, or someone you love, to the pampered bliss of CVWC's Relaxation Massage. This service will relieve tension and soothe nerves through total body relaxation by incorporating long sweeping movements to treat every muscle from head to toe. CVWC's Relaxation Massage focuses on YOU, reducing your stress, while increasing circulation of fluids and relieving muscle discomfort....and it feels amazing!
Hayley Kotton, LMT at CVWC says, "Relaxation massage, also known as Swedish massage, provides many benefits for the mind, body, and spirit. 'During treatment, a massotherapist uses touch, a professional touch, applied with intelligence, with control, and with purpose' (Kellogg), to manipulate the muscles and soft tissue of the body. Well-being replaces stress and tension as the breath deepens and stiff, sore muscles relax. Often, this deep state of relaxation is only obtained during sleep as we rush about our busy lives. Relaxation massage can also help relieve your pain, insomnia, and anxiety. It improves digestion, nutrition, metabolism and circulation and can develop muscles while increasing their power. The power of touch is truly amazing."

Summer Maintenance
"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure."
--Joseph Pilates, Return to Life Through Contrology, 1945
All the activities enjoyed during the summer months can leave your body feeling a little, or alot, out of sorts. Long, albeit fun, days in the hot sun golfing or boating, even gardening and barbecuing can really take a toll on your body. Do yourself and your body a favor by sticking to a regular routine. This will help ensure you are willing and able to take advantage of all the fun experiences this summer has to offer. Maintain your "zest" & "pleasure" with periodic Muscle Release Therapy, MRTh® and Functional Movement with Pilates Machines(sm) sessions. Ask your therapist and instructor to recommend frequency for MRTh® and Pilates, based on your unique needs and desires.
And always......drink plenty of water!!
This issue of "Path to Wellness" will serve as our first quarterly newsletter. You can expect to receive the next issue on September 1, 2008. We will continue to periodically inform you of new developments and special events. As always, please feel encouraged to contact us with any questions, comments and ideas.
